If a Danube River cruise isn't something you've considered putting on your bucket list, it should be!
River cruise experts debate whether the Rhine or the Danube is the most spectacular, and up until my recent trip I sided with those who tout the traditional Amsterdam-to-Basel Rhine River itinerary as the ultimate experience. It's hard to compete with a castle-laden route that meanders through an ultra scenic Rhine River Gorge, bringing your fairy tale trip to life. However, I am here to say that the Danube is every bit as spectacular as its Rhine counterpart, and in some ways, it wows even more!
How is that possible? It's true that the sheer quantity of castles along the Rhine is undeniably unmatched. But where the Danube really shines is the imperial cities and quaint towns along the shores of its typical itineraries: Vienna, Melk, Durnstein, Bratislava, and Budapest are home to some of the most impressive sights I've ever seen!
With a shared history under the rule of the Habsburg dynasty for centuries, each location you visit unravels more of the story of this once-powerful empire that dotted the landscape with a plethora of imperial palaces and abbeys that will make your jaw drop in awe. And if you are lucky enough to sail into Budapest at night, you will get to experience one of the most stunning views offered anywhere in Europe - Old World (now re-purposed) imperial palaces light up the night sky like the sun. Rarely have I ever witnessed anything so beautiful.
So if you are considering a river cruise, I can now highly recommend the Danube in addition to the Rhine. Both offer an unparalleled experience in their own way, and neither trumps the other. The only real decision is which one to do first!
